Holistic Food Therapy - An Energetically Appropriate Diet
As a consultant at The Pet Empawrium, stockists of a huge range of natural products, raw foods and treats, I give advice on types of diet available to pet owners when they attend for a therapy appointment.
Do we have to spend a fortune to feed the best diet ? or is supermarket own brand ok to feed - they wouldn't sell it if it wasn't, right ?
Obviously we want a food that fits with our budget and lifestyle but most of us have come to realise that it can mean compromising on the health of our animal families when we put our needs before theirs. Be prepared to do a bit of research, no matter what type of food you decide on, expensive doesn't always mean you are getting the best nutrition, and cheap highly processed food is just a big NO !
I have always taken issue with the manufacturers of processed food. If the glossy ads and fancy packaging are to be believed the food in the bag is the equivalent of the juicy steak or fresh salmon with healthy veg that you might be having for dinner yourself - then this little brown pellet rolls out !
Yes, there are added vitamins, minerals, botanicals, super duper foods etc BUT that's because all the nutrition has been removed from the original ingredients to turn them into that convenient little brown pellet.
You may have looked into 'natural' or raw feeding but sometimes that can feel a little overwhelming too with the choice of ingredients and information out there, that you don't even know where to start. Advocates of certain methods of feeding often don't take into consideration that not all dogs can tolerate the same foods, for various reasons including, simply, individual choice.
The one certainty is that fresh, real, species appropriate food is best, whether raw or cooked. Energetically appropriate is even better.
What I do in this consultation is look at your pet as an individual their age, their constitution, their energy balance which will give YOU a guideline to the types and thermal effects of food within the feeding regime you already have or to start adding fresh foods to their diet. This will also include culinary herbs and spices as well as some functional foods referred to as nutriceuticals, from an energy perspective - what enhances their energy and what depletes it according to the teachings of TCM and Ayurveda ( this can be further investigated in a Kinesiology session).
I cannot prescribe or formulate a diet for your pet but I am happy to refer you to a pet nutritionist who can offer this service if you want to prepare your pet's meals from scratch and make sure they are perfectly balanced.
If your pet is under medical supervision this consultation is recommended in partnership with advice from a vet or pet nutritionist.
