Zoopharmacognosy and Essential Oil Therapy
Zoopharmacognosy is the process by which animals self medicate, in their natural environment, by selecting and using plants, minerals and insects to treat and prevent disease.
Animals have an innate sense which leads them to forage and select therapeutic elements in their environment, which includes plants containing essential oils and herbal compounds that would not be part of their normal everyday diet. This natural ability has been studied now for many years and was termed 'zoopharmacognosy' by Dr. Elroy Rodriguez, a biochemist and professor at Cornell University. At a cellular level the body knows and craves what it needs to bring about homeostasis ( balance ) in a particular bodily system or when the nervous system is overwhelmed read more >>>
Essential Oil Therapy uses the best quality organic or wild grown essential oils ( as opposed to using fragrance or possibly adulterated essential oils ) the odour molecules will travel to where they are needed most, people are often surprised at how a fragrance, simply inhaled, can give a whole body response and change in their stress level. It is not just the physical properties but the energy aspect and fragrance profile of essential oils and medicinal plants that makes a huge contribution to the overall outcome, I am trained in this approach both for human and animal wellbeing therapy.
A guided session of Zoopharmacognosy allows your pet to explore natural substances, something that our domestic pets don't get the chance to do very often, (you may see them choose to drink from a muddy puddle, not a good idea unless you are sure you are in an area that is totally unpolluted) it is becoming increasingly difficult to find local healing plants to graze on as hedgerows are being destroyed, cultivated plants are no substitute as often they have little therapeutic value.
I will guide you in the choice of oils that we will present to your pet for self selection, from a range of natural remedies that are known for their various therapeutic actions on different body systems and from plant families that we know would be present in their natural environment BUT it is entirely up to your pet to select what they need in the combination that is appropriate for them.
